What Now? Accountability.

Seriously. I’ve been searching for what my role is now. I realize we all have a substantial amount of work to do to level the playing field for our friends of color. And it’s way past time. Are you in this for the long haul, or for a few solid Instagram posts.

I’m a middle aged white woman who has been white her whole life. So I can’t play expert to some of the most meaningful issues rising up today. I am listening, I’m doing my homework. I know where my gifts and strengths lie.

Recently my clients and I have been diving into Values Discovery work. So when I started searching last week, I reflected on my own top three values: Service, Empathy and Authenticity. It’s possible these three are a strong fit for these times.

As a coach, I’ve learned to sit back, to wait for the truth that’s underneath all that’s being said. I’ve also learned how critical accountability is for my clients and for any of us to create change and to move forward with our goals.

Today I trust that my role is to continue my work and my passion, and to bring whatever strengths I have to influence change. I believe it’s time for all of us to be accountable.

The past few weeks I’ve seen a sea of information on social media. Not all of it rang true for me, and I think we all work with what resonates for us. We can choose to open our hearts and minds to understand and pledge to help make a difference. What’s next? We each need to understand our commitments and ask ourselves and others to now be accountable. Talk is still cheap.

I am different from many, I don’t shout and scream from balconies, I never have. I am back here doing what I do, and I am honoring my authentic self by not doing what others do, but staying true to my inner voice.

What is your inner voice asking of you today?

Black Lives Matter, and it’s getting later.
